With little fanfare, Joseph Gross presided over his last board of trustee meeting as Mayor of the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson on Monday evening.

With the chair for the village attorney empty, the board approved an eight percent increase in garbage collection fees to partly cover a discrepancy in the sanitation department budget. Discussion of other budget matters was tabled when trustees Mark Edsall, Douglas Vatter and James Kane advised that as long an Article 78 legal case is pending against the board it would be difficult to take an action. Mayor Gross filed the Article 78 petition to challenge the status of the attorney representing the village. A hearing on that is scheduled for March 30th. www.cornwall-ny.com/news.cfm?page=6884

At the Monday meeting, Mayor Gross updated the board on two issues that he has worked on since entering office four years ago. Simon Gruber, the chair of the Riverfront Revitalization Committee said he had renewed hope for future funding from FEMA for a project to rebuild the shoreline, noting that the first FEMA grant was too small to cover the costs of the proposed project. Gross also introduced John Brady, the manager of Black Rock Forest, who described a project with members of Boy Scout Troop 118 to re-forest village land on Round Top Park. Mayor Gross has pushed to find out who was responsible for cutting trees from the rocky slopes and said that the police have investigated though no arrests have been made.

As the business wrapped up, deputy mayor Barbara Gosda recognized the Mayor and thanked him and his commitment to the community. Trustees Kane and Edsall also thanked the Mayor and Edsall thanked his fellow trustee Douglas Vatter, who lost his seat on the board by one vote in the March 15th election.

With that, the Mayor said “thank you” and “good evening” then quickly left the room.

Next Monday, April 4th, a new mayor, Brendan Coyne, and a new trustee, Andrew Argenio, will be sworn into office, along with Trustee Mark Edsall who was re-elected to a seventh term as trustee.
