Dozens of princesses, knights and some cute little green frogs will take center stage on Friday night as the curtain rises on the Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary School’s production of Once Upon A Mattress.

Set in a magical kingdom in a magical time, the young lords and ladies of the land face a terrible dilemma: they can’t marry until Prince Dauntless finds the person who his mother, the Queen, believes is the perfect wife.

The Marriage Law of the Land is set in stone for all to see: “Throughout this land, no one shall wed till the Dauntless to the altar’s led.” The edict is signed by Queen Aggravain, who rules the kingdom with an iron hand. She’s managed to cast a spell to keep her husband, King Sextimus the Silent, from speaking until a mouse devours a hawk and she is determined to have the last word about who will wed her son, the prince.

The Queen has put 12 maidens through a test to see if they are worthy of Dauntless and they all fail. Then Sir Harry goes out to swamp to find more candidates and when he returns, he is followed by Princess Winnifred the Woebegone, a brash and unrefined princess from the marshlands who was so eager to arrive that she swam the castle moat. Prince Dauntless meets her and it is love at first sight. The only person standing in the way of a trip to the altar is, you guessed it, Queen Aggravain.

Based on the Hans Christian Anderson fairytale, The Princess and the Pea, Once Upon A Mattress is a musical comedy that gives the talented elementary school students a chance to sing, dance and dress in elaborate period costumes.

Karen Eremin is directing this production of Once Upon A Mattress, a show she first directed a dozen years ago. She has the able assistance of a cast of parents who built the castle set backdrop, sewed additional details on the gowns and headdresses, decorated the lobby and theater walls and helped to organize nearly 100 young children into a stage full of lords and ladies.

Steve Kessler, who teaches music and band at the Cornwall Central Middle School, is serving as musical director, leading a pit orchestra of dedicated local volunteer musicians.

Tickets are in demand but you may get lucky enough to get a ticket. There are two performances of Once Upon A Mattress, one on Friday and Saturday at 7 pm.
