Four of Cornwall’s best student athletes have signed letters of intent to attend colleges that are ranked in Division One of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Rachel Miller, Kim Sharo and Tyree Smallwood gathered for a brief post-signing ceremony in the office of Cornwall schools Athletic Director Lou Cioffi on Thursday morning where they were applauded for their accomplishments. The fourth athlete, Aisling Cuffe, was absent, on her way to San Diego to compete this Saturday in the SA Cross Country National Championships.

Athletic director Cioffi said that it was unusual for the school to have such a strong showing of talent accepted by Division One schools. “This is those most we’ve ever had,” Cioffi said, noting that academic achievements are part of the scholarships the students have won.

Runner Rachel Miller has accepted an offer to go to the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. She first gained attention for her running abilities in seventh grade and the next year, while still in the middle school, she was chosen as a member of the high school varsity track team. She has been a team leader ever since and also plays on the varsity girls soccer team.  She says that her current focus is competing in 800-meter races.

Kim Sharo is planning to go to the University of Louisville, where she will continue her soccer career as a member of the Cardinals. Kim’s mother, Betsy, says that her daughter owes a lot to the experience she gained as a member of the Quickstrike travel soccer team. She has competed all across the U.S. and the team is ranked number five nationally. Kim says that the Louisville school spirit attracted her. “They are crazy into it,” she said, “people from the town come to watch the soccer games.”

Tyre Smallwood grabbed headlines as the star running back for the Cornwall Dragons football team this season and he had several colleges pursuing him. “I looked around and I knew where I wanted to be, Syracuse,” Tyree said. Tyree said that his gift is speed, a gift that he has used playing basketball and baseball before settling on football in high school. A native of Brooklyn, Tyree moved to Cornwall in 2004. He says he will start out as a running back for the Orangemen in Syracuse in the fall.

Cross country runner Aisling Cuffe, who on Tuesday was named the Gatorade National Girls Cross Country Runner, missed the celebration. Her mother, Marie, brought in a cake for her daughter’s fellow athletic stars since she could not be there to enjoy the celebration.
