General News: Storm Safety Warning Issued

February 01, 2011

The village and town of Cornwall ended local state of emergency orders effective at 6 pm on Wednesday, February 2.  Cornwall emergency response director Kurt Hahn says that the order prohibits parking on all streets and limits it to 30 minutes in the business district.  Also limited travel is requested on roadways for safety of emergency vehicles and snow removal equipment.  He notes that emergency shelter requests can be made at the police dispatch at 845-534-8100.

From Shannon Fisher Emergency Management Programs Coordinator Orange County Department of Emergency Services

On behalf of Deputy Commissioner Seamus Leary and the Orange County Emergency Operations Center we are asking all to take preventive actions with regards to the storm scheduled to begin Tuesday, February 1.

Current forecast models are advising a 10-15 inch snow storm to begin Tuesday morning and increase with intensity throughout the day with a slow decrease in the evening. Beginning midnight Wednesday, we are anticipating a half-an-inch to an inch of ice to hit the region causing wide spread power outages, and structure damage.

Please, please, please take this storm very seriously and wherever possible pass along the advisement to shovel off flat roofs and already compacted roofs wherever possible and keep fire hydrants clear –but to do so with extreme caution and observed safety at all times. We are asking for the assistance of all building inspectors in the area to help us pass out this advisement in order to avoid as many structure collapses as possible. The Orange County Emergency Operations Center will be at a Level 3 activation beginning Tuesday at 0800. Thank you again for all your assistance in helping us prepare and advise the Orange County public as much as possible.

Comments:

During this storm event in the possibility of electrical outages would the facility at the firehouse accommodate the needs of the community? If so maybe this would be a good time to scroll notification on the message board at the firehouse. Just a thought

John, the Village firehouse has in fact been scrolling all day the notification that emergency facilities have been set up at Covac.

dpn't forget to also check on your elderly neighbors if possible. Remember, many of them are alone.

Does Covac need to be abbreviated?

Hello? Is there anybody out there who doesn't know it means Cornwall Volunteer Ambulance Corps Inc.?

does this mean u can go to covac in case of emergency--like if on oxygen and electric is out ?

at least i goT someone to post the actual name..do you know what this means..SWIAAA..?

posted by Warren Edward on 02/02/11 at 11:44 AM

I suspect you mean SWIAA--the Southwest Indian Agricultural Association.

But if not, that's a game we can play forever. I probably can come up with dozens of aviation and military acronyms that I use daily, though they'll baffle you. You do live in a town where the local newspaper will invariably use the word "Covac" in any related headline, and nobody seems to have a problem with it.

I suspect you don't either, since you didn't post, "What's a Covac?" you just posted that we shouldn't abbreviate it. I disagree.
