General News: County Approves Step to Preserve Land

January 24, 2011

A small piece of land in Cornwall is being added to the mosaic of public land that stretches from Storm King Mountain State Park to Schunnemunk Mountain.
The Orange County Land Trust recently announced that the parcel near the intersection of Mountain Road and Route 9W, along with two larger parcels in Warwick, were taken off the 2010 Orange County Tax Sale auction roll so that it could be sold to local conservation groups. The move followed legislation enacted by last year by the Orange County Legislature.

The Palisades Interstate Park Commission intends to purchase the parcel in Cornwall, which measures just under one acre, and add it to the Palisades State Park. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy plans to acquire the Warwick parcels.

Each year, the county publishes a list containing properties the county auctions in lieu of payment of property taxes. After the most recent publication, several parcels of land with high conservation, recreational or scenic value were targeted by the Orange County Department of Planning and pulled off the auction roll by the County Executive for possible sale to local conservation groups.

The Orange County Land Trust worked with the County Executive and Planning Department Commissioner David Church in coordinating an effort on behalf of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission, the Open Space Institute, the New York/New Jersey Trails Conference and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy to protect these important lands.

Comments:

Perhaps through a matrix of funding we can preserve "the farm" at NYMA.

I'll second "the farm" plan!

Just under 1 acre??

I'm all for preserving land, especially in Cornwall, but that seems like a lot of administrative work for such a small piece of land. I suppose if it happens on a regular basis then is starts to add up, so hopefully that's the case.

Anything to hold off the ravenous developers...
