General News: Jan Smith to Run for Village Trustee

January 06, 2011

A fourth person is joining the race for village trustee in Cornwall-on-Hudson. Jan Smith, 58,  a life-long village resident, picked up a petition for the office on Wednesday. She plans to begin collecting signatures this weekend.

Smith says that she is making her first run for office because she thinks that she can help get things done on the village board, which she says is at a stalemate. “I want to represent the concerns of the residents,” she said on Thursday. “I don’t think the current board is effective.”

Smith, who recently retired after 35 years as an auditor and accountant at West Point, added that she has reviewed the financial books of the village going back three to four years and can see that resources can be handled better. She said that she made some recommendations to Mayor Gross, who, she said, has worked on some of them. She noted, however, that she could be even more effective in bringing efficiencies to the village if elected trustee. “We are in a poor economic climate and I’d like to see if there is a way that we can save money and operate more efficiently,” she said.

Four people are now collecting signatures to appear on the ballot for trustee in the March 15th election. Incumbent trustees Mark Edsall and Douglas Vatter are being challenged by Smith and Andrew Argenio. In the mayoral race, Brendan Coyne and Al Mazzocca, are challenging Mayor Gross, who is running for a third term in office.

If I still lived there, Jan Smith would get my vote! Glad to see that good people are willing to step up and offer their expertise for the good of the Village. Also good to see that some are already open to her suggestions, and utilizing intelligent and informed suggestions.
