General News: Most-Commented Stories of 2010

December 31, 2010

Earlier this week, you read about the top ten stories of 2010, based on the number of unique visitors to each article. But what about the most talked-about stories of the year? Don’t you want to know what issues are prompting people to express their opinions?

The top conversation of the year has been going on this week. It’s a discussion about whether the mayor of Cornwall-on-Hudson has the right to choose his own counsel and it followed a letter from Jonathan Chase, the mayor’s defacto attorney, in which he explained his position on the issue. (A copy of a letter from the New York State Conference of Mayors and Municipal Officials on the attorney issue is downloadable at the bottom of this article.)

The attorney dispute is part of an argument that has been raging since April, when a new board of trustees was seated that included a majority opposed to the mayor. Because of a failure among board members to agree on key issues of village government, little progress has been made in resolving many problems, including the repair of the DPW building. Local residents had a lot to say about the situation, which was addressed in five of the ten most commented stories of the year.

Mickey Jackson’s letter, “Don’t Let It Happen Here,” responding to fears about how the sale of NYMA could change Cornwall, sparked a series of 40 comments. A story describing a presentation to the school board about the middle school counseling program turned into a long series of comments about the board of education and the mission of the school district.

A letter questioning the background of the village building inspector turned into a “screaming” match with finger-pointing that drowned out much of the debate. And a photo of the village mayor at the riverfront raised questions of fairness, including whether this site was wrong to have posted it in the first place.

The seizure of a field of marijuana plants turned into a discussion of the legalization of the illegal drug and about whether law enforcement would be better served focusing on other criminal acts.

Finally, the news that two full-time officers in the village of Cornwall tied with an article about the newly-adopted village budget with the same number of comments in each.
