Three vehicles, including a school bus carrying students from Cornwall Elementary School, were involved in a chain reaction accident on Main Street in Cornwall on Monday afternoon. No one was injured in the accident.

Cornwall police chief Todd Hazard said that the school bus had stopped outside of the Butterhill School on Main Street to let off students when it was struck from behind by a van, whose hood was stuck underneath the bus. A third vehicle, an SUV behind the van, had damage to its hood and Hazard said that it struck the van that had stopped for the school bus, sending it under the bus.

Hazard said that 17 students were about to get off the bus to attend an after school program at Butterhill Day School but that none had exited when the accident occurred.

An eyewitness, Judy Ho, said she was sitting by the window at Smitchger Realty, where she is employed, when she heard a thud. “I looked up and saw the van hit the bus,” she said. “It sounded like the two cars hit each other first.” Ho also noted that the setting sun cast a glare that made it hard to see taillights of the vehicles.

A representative of the school district, assistant superintendent Harvey Sotland and the principal of the school at Lee Road, Donna Hannon, soon arrived on the scene to ensure the safety of the students on the bus.

As the students headed for Butterhill School got off the bus, police chief Hazard said that a second bus was enroute to deliver the remaining students to their homes.
