A three-story apartment house on Tamara Lane in Cornwall was declared uninhabitable following a fire on Saturday morning that apparently started as a result of construction work onsite.

Town building inspector Gary Vinson said that the occupants of 12 apartments at the site, which includes the original three-story house and a one-story addition built in 1960, were ordered to evacuate the apartments. He said that the Red Cross is helping some of the tenants find shelter.

Vinson said that a fire started in the interior wall in one apartment on the ground floor and was quickly contained by firefighters from the Highland Engine Company. He said that the contractor hired by the building’s new owner to replace siding did not probably discharge carbon monoxide from pipes inside the wall, leading to the fire. Once repairs are made, Vinson expects that the residents will be able to return to their apartments.
