Be prepared to go back in time at the latest performance of the Canterbury Theatre Ensemble at Storm King School, Cheaper by the Dozen, which premiered this Saturday night.

Taking place in the busy household of the Gilbreth family in the 1950’s, Cheaper by the Dozen is a wonderful family show with music, actors and props that will effortlessly leave you feeling like you just watched some of your old family movies.

The opening scene with Kristen Casey playing Ernestine Gilbreth and James Chesser as Frank Gilbreth, set the stage for the special show. Their portrayal of brother and sister came through undeniably and left me anxiously wondering what I was in store for.

Following the opening scene, the audience gets introduced to the perfectly casted, Mr. Gilbreth, played by Ray Fulton. Immediately one can’t help but be reminded of their strict, deep, powerful, yet always loving, father. Fulton plays the part of all of our fathers with ease, and gets even better as the show goes on and “the dozen” are introduced, which in my opinion are the icing on the cake.

Shining bright amongst these actors was Emma Landau, playing the oldest of the Gilbreth dozen, Anne. Emma portrays the fast teenager growing up with ease and grace, and seems mature way beyond her acting years. Also doing a wonderful job, John Parides who plays Larry, Anne’s crush. John’s uncanny ability to perform each line in his very individual way had me hysterical throughout all of his parts.

The rest of the young actors, Ben Narich, Alexa Huppe, Kirsten Bell, Caroline Flynn, Brooke Garfinkel, Gavin O’Gorman, Carly Fields, Sean Flynn, and Amelia Douches complete the Gilbreth dozen perfectly. As if a real family, their abilities to truly interact with one another like real life siblings was wonderful. Each one of the child actors and actresses shine with their own take on each of the kids.

I cannot forget to mention Anne Fulton who plays Mrs. Gilbreth. From the moment she comes onto the stage her motherly aura is very apparent. The children on stage gravitate towards her as she reacts to them and takes them in like her own. Her chemistry with Fulton brings the entire family around full circle.

As Mr. Gilbreth states many times throughout the play “time is so, so precious” so make the best of your night, gather up your family and take them to see this fun, familiar, and heartwarming family story.
