“We may have to sleep here the next few days but Cornwall Farms is going to open Friday,” Ed Jennings said Monday.

Jennings and his brothers Chris and Frank will operate the new grocery store at Cornwall Plaza in the location last occupied by the Key Food Marketplace, which closed in March after eight years in business.

The store will have a grand opening Saturday, featuring free food samples from companies such as Boar’s Head. Jennings said a six-page circular should arrive this week in homes in Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson.

The store is bustling these last few days leading up to the opening. Jennings remains cool under the onslaught of questions. Carpenters and electricians are finishing the customer service office and some of the food stations. Jennings said he hired 50 full- and part-time workers, 45 locally and most of them from Cornwall and the new employees are stocking shelves and creating food displays. Advertising agents present proposals. Purveyors deliver food.

Jennings said they spent $1 million dollars renovating the well-lit store, which opened in 1960 as a Grand Union supermarket. The new flooring alone cost $100, 000.

The layout will be familiar to those who shopped in Key Food Marketplace and the Grand Union supermarket. Jennings said it just made sense to place items where the infrastructure already existed.

Produce will greet shoppers as they enter the store. One of the suppliers is Mountain Fresh Farms of Highland, which produces hydroponic tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and herbs. Hydroponics - a method of growing plants using mineral solutions, in water, without soil – will allow the grower to provide produce all year round. Owner Carole Crimivaroli said she was excited about the opportunity.

“I’m impressed with their people,” Crimivaroli. “They asked the right questions.”

Jennings said Nancy Proyect, president of the Cornwall food co-op board, which recently closed its store, has provided him with a list of farms that had supplied the co-op.

The deli, featuring a wide variety of salads, is in the right rear corner of the store. Prepared ready-to-go foods including dinners, chicken dishes, freshly made pasta, soups and sauces will face the deli.

“We’ll have a trained chef on the premises at all times,” Jennings said.

Meat and fish will line the back of the store. Frozen food will be available on the far side of the store. Canned and packages foods, paper goods, household products and other items will fill the aisles in the middle of the store. The customer service office will be in the same location as in the two previous stores.

Jennings has also expressed interest in taking over the former Key Food Marketplace in Highland Falls but said no progress has been made.

“My plate is pretty full right now,” said Jennings, the youngest of 14 children.

Cornwall Farms will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day

Comments:

Finally a positive story of intelligent business development in Cornwall! With all this talk about NYMA secret meetings, KJ2 plots and general gloom and doom, it's refreshing to see a bit of progress again.
I look forward to shopping there.

This store is going to be an awesome addition to our town. Let's all remember how miserable it was these last months to have to go to Vail's Gate for every little thing, and support this local business!!!

Great News! I hope they maintain reasonable prices and a clean environment - a sure fire guarantee for success!

jack, very funny. Good luck I will support this business to the fullest extent and yes it is positive to see this activity, the Chase bank landscaping and they finally destroyed that eyesore house on the cross street from Cornwall Plaza. We are on the move forward to TAKE BACK CORNWALL!!!!
