The local jazz scene will be smoking hot the weekend of November 19 and 20, when six bands take the stage at Orange County Community College to celebrate its 60th anniversary.

Three Bands, One Great Evening

The South Street Quartet kicks off the two-day festival with an ecletic mix of rock, soul, funk and classical music at 7 pm. The quartet is formed by SUNY Orange alumni, Shane Kirsh, sax; Bev Poyerd, piano; Dave Miele, drums; and Zach Cooper, bass.

Big Bang Jazz Gang, a Hudson Valley consortium of fourteen players directed by Bassist Robert Kopec, will follow at 8 pm with a performance of music by Monk, Mingus, Coltrane and other traditional jazz pieces.

The Latin sound of Bronx Horns promises a rousing end to Friday’s concerts when they come on for a 90-minute set.  Directed by Mitch Frohman, tenor sax/flute, the group is composed of musicians who played with Tito Puente and Mongo Santamaria. It includes Grammy award-winner Oscar Hernandez, piano; Bobby Porcelli, alto sax; Pete Nater, trumpet; Gerado Madera, bass; Eric Velez, congas; and Willie Martinez, drums, who also is the leader of La Familia Sextet.

Young Musicians Offer Free Concert


Saturday afternoon will offer a rare opportunity to talented young musicians from the area who will play under the direction of Mitch Frohman, leader of the Bronx Horns. A free concert of Tito Puente pieces will begin at 2pm on Saturday, November 20.

Swing, Harp and Vocals on Saturday Night

If big band swing is your thing, you’ll want to return on Saturday to hear the popular New York Swing Exchange at 7 pm This 17-piece orchestra consists of five reeds, four trombones, four trumpets, four rhythm, and vocalist, Maureen Morrissey and is made up of area music educators.

Edmar Castaneda, jazz harpist, takes the stage at 8 pm, accompanied by percussionist Dave Silliman. Originally from Bogota, Colombia, this harp virtuoso has played his many-stringed instrument with Paquito D'Rivera, Wynton Marsalis, John Scofield, Joe Locke, John Patitucci, Lila Downs, Chico O'Farrill Afro-Cuban jazz big band and the United Nations Orchestral.

The finale and highlight of Saturday night is 75 minute set by the New York Voices, the Grammy Award winning vocal ensemble renowned for their excellence in jazz and the art of group singing. In the tradition of Manhattan Transfer and Take 6, the New York Voices combine complex, interwoven vocal lines and interactive improvising with brisk ensemble accompaniment. The four vocalists, Darmon Meader, Peter Eldrige, Kim Nazarian, and Lauren Kinhan, have instrumental backing.

This weekend of great and varied jazz is dedicated to the late Dr. Marvin K. Feman, Originator of the College’s Music Department, who played trumpet in several area jazz bands. His daughter, Holly Harris, a Blues and Jazz radio show host on the Boston airwaves for over 25 years, is MCing the two-evening event

All performances take place on the stage of Orange Hall Theatre. Orange Hall, which is ADA compliant, is located at the corner of Wawayanda and Grandview Avenues, Middletown, NY.

Tickets for the evening performances are available online @ www.sunyorange.edu; then click on "Events," then "Online Ticketing."

Tickets will also be at the Orange Hall box office starting at 5:45pm each concert evening.

In addition, tickets are available on campus in the Shepard Student Center lobby during the following hours: Mondays 12noon-3pm; Tuesdays 10:30am-1:30pm; Wednesday 1:30pm-3:30pm; and Thursday 11:30am-1:30pm.
