General News: Rules of Conduct Sought by Village

October 20, 2010

Civility may be back at the village board meeting after disruptive public behavior and an abrupt comment by the mayor led one trustee to summon a police officer to keep the peace at last month’s meeting.

On Monday, Mayor Gross read Bridgit Flynn’s letter apologizing for her outburst in September. The mayor added his own apology to residents for what he called “any behavior not befitting their mayor.”

Later in the meeting, Mayor Gross asked for input on a law for that would establish rules of conduct at public meetings, “I thought it was time to rein things in a bit,” he said. Rules of conduct could address issues like length of comments allowed from members of the public and whether board members have to respond to questions from the public.

Trouble last month started when three members of the public spoke out of turn and yelled at each other. Mayor Gross ruled Bridgit Flynn out of order and abruptly told her to be silent. The trustees argued about almost every item on the agenda and the mayor accused trustee Edsall of having hidden motives two years ago when he questioned the placement of signs to the parking lot.

On Monday, Flynn read a new letter to the board, looking at each board member as she first described how village residents are unhappy with the conduct at the monthly meetings then asked, “Why can’t you put this village on the map and compromise?"  A people in the audience clapped when she said that and the remainder of the evening remained civil.

Comments:

Kudos to Bridgit. Well done with the right question at the right time to the right people. Might she be interested running for Mayor?

If village residents are unhappy with the conduct at the meetings then perhaps they should practice being civil to one another. And LIMIT THE COMMENTS TO 5 MINUTES.If you cannot express what you want to say clearly, concisely, and briefly, then you haven't thought about it enough.
