General News: Little Bobby Barton's Music Scene

October 30, 2006

By "Little" Bobby Barton

Saturday October 28,2006, a day that will live in infamy.
Well, not really, BUT, it was a good night for music here in Cornwall.

You see, this was opening night for 2 Alices Coffee Lounge's first-ever, Acoustic Open Mic -- hosted by, non other than, the Open Mic Guru, Me.

The doors opened at 7:00, and it was non stop until the wee hours of the night. Well, 11:00 PM. (When you are my age, that IS the wee hours.)

First, let me take a moment to explain the “Open Mic” game plan. Our doors open at 7:00 and music begins at 8:00. The rule is 2 songs or 10 minutes. This simply means: The Minute Waltz twice, or an edited version of “Ina goda da vita.”

When the doors open at 7:00, there is a mad rush for “The List," the list being the sign up sheet. This is very crucial for playing position. You see, generally, nobody wants to go first or, for that matter, last. The prime spots are numbers 4 thru 8. This is when (Hopefully) the most people will be in that audience.

But at 2 Alice’s that night, this was not the case. By the time the music started at 8:00, it was standing room only. (And people were still trying to get in!) As far as Open Mic’s go, this one was a hit.

The evening started off with the youngest performer of the night, Fiona Derkin. Young Fiona took the stage like a pro and wowed the crowd that had swelled well past 40 people since the doors opened. By the time that 3-minute and 20-second song ended, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

Then it was Fiona’s older sister's turn at the mic. Her sister fronts a band called, Anatidavephobia (Fear that you are being watched by a duck).
I’m not making that name up, folks. The band included some pretty talented young Cornwallites: Whitney Schuster, Elizabeth Way, Liz Parisi
and Alita Derkin.

By the time 11:00 came, people had been treated to 14 different acts.

2 Alice’s Open Mic will be held EVERY 4th Saturday of the month.

For more info, stop by and say Hi! Or give 2 Alices a call at 534-4717.

Until next month I remain,

“Little” Bobby Barton
