General News: Ethics Board Member Approved

September 21, 2010

The village board approved a new member of the ethics board at its meeting on Monday, filling a seat that has been empty since May when its chairman resigned.

A divided board of trustees approved the appointment of Kristen Doyle to the position after rejecting the nomination of Jan Smith to the same position. Following the appointment of its third member, the ethics board is expected to consider four pending complaints lodged against four of the five trustees, including Mayor Gross.

Two of the trustees facing ethics complaints, Mark Edsall and Doug Vatter, abstained from voting. Trustee Gosda and mayor Gross chose to cast their votes despite also facing complaints in front of the board. They both voted in favor of Smith, who Gosda noted has lived in the village all of her life, but trustee Kane voted against her, blocking the appointment. Gosda then nominated Doyle, the only other applicant, and Gosda, Gross and Kane voted in her favor.

It would help if articles like this one included info on WHY one board member or another was opposed to a certain nominee.
