The Cornwall-on-Hudson water department is looking for a temporary home. Displaced from its offices by the evacuation of the department of public works building last February, water department employees have been working out of makeshift quarters at the water treatment plant off Route 94.

Water department chief Bob June told the Cornwall-on-Hudson board of trustees on Monday night that with winter coming, they need a better workspace. “You have people working out of a water plant that wasn’t designed for it.” June said. “Men are taking breaks all over the place, wherever they can.”

Last month the department of public works employees moved into a temporary trailer on the grounds of the DPW. June would like to see his employees in a similar facility at the old water department headquarters on Maple Avenue. He said the garage on the premises where they can store vehicles makes it a good choice.

Board member Barbara Gosda, however, said that neighbors’ reaction to a trailer should be taken into account. “How unsightly that would be in that neighborhood,” she said. “We have tried to be sensitive to that neighborhood.

The water department moved out of the Maple Avenue building in 2008 because of its deteriorated condition. The village has been unsuccessful in its efforts to sell the property.

June estimates it would cost nearly $6,500 to set up and rent a trailer for six months. Trustee Doug Vatter encouraged him to look for a vacant commercial space that could be rented before a decision is made.
