General News: Public Hearing on Gas Drilling

A public hearing has been set to allow for input on the contentious subject of horizontal gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale that runs underneath portions of Broome County. Last month the town of Barker passed a resolution in favor of the drilling and it is seeking other municipalities to follow in its footsteps.
In a letter, Barker supervisor Lois Dilworth wrote ““Considering New York State’s nearly bankrupt condition, and considering the wealth of natural gas production available to totally eliminate that said condition, the town of Barker has passed a resolution to support horizontal drilling in the Marcellus Shale formation. We are respectfully requesting your town board give consideration to joining us in urging the approval of horizontal drilling in New York.”
Cornwall council members want to hear from the public before making a decision. The hearing is set for 7:20 pm on Tuesday, October 12, 2010.
The environmental impact of the hydraulic gas drilling was the focus of a hearing on Monday night in Binghamton, NY, attended by hundreds of people on both sides of the issues.

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) ? Thirteen families in the heart of the gas-rich Marcellus Shale say their water wells have been contaminated by poisonous fluids blasted deep underground by a drilling company using a technique at the center of a fierce nationwide debate.
A faulty gas well drilled by Houston-based Southwestern Energy Co. leaked toxic fracking fluid into local groundwater in northeastern Pennsylvania's Susquehanna County, exposing residents to dangerous chemicals and sickening a child, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday.
