General News: Town Drops Plan to Ban Skateboarding

Skateboarders will still have free range at Cornwall parks after the town council dropped an effort to ban the recreational wheels.

The ban on skateboarding was tacked on to a new proposed bill that would have regulated use of the town’s newest park on Angola Road. Supervisor Kevin Quigley said the concern was that skateboarders are damaging steps and creating liabilities in the parks.

However, town councilman Randy Clark said that several constituents had spoken to him against the ban and he defended the young skateboarders. “Wben you ask them, they generally move on, very courteous,” Clark observed of the skateboarders who hang out at town hall park. “They are just looking to do what is their hobby.”

A member of the public, Hector Torres, who also serves as a court officer, disagreed, saying that he hears complaints from people regularly about skateboarders putting dents in cars.

Council members Kerry McGuinness and Mary Beth Greene Krafft agreed with Clark to drop the ban on skateboarding. A new version of the bill focusing on use of Angola Park will be the subject of a public hearing on October 13th at 7:15 pm.

While agreeing to the decision, councilman Clark questioned why a sign was posted at town hall prohibiting skateboarding, rollerskating and bicycle riding on town hall parks and grounds. He said he couldn’t find a motion that added ‘no bicycling’ on the park grounds. “There is a bike rack at the library but how are we supposed to get there?” he asked his fellow council members, a question that no one at that moment could answer.

Comments:

My husband and I would LOVE to build a skateboard park and facility. We would have after school programs, kids band night, and a great, safe place to skate. We have solid contacts in the industry and would pursue opening if we had the town backing! It has always been our dream, but we would need a cooperative effort from the town and strong community support.

I don't have kids that like to skateboard, but clearly there are so many kids in town who do. Although not a recognized sport in schools or town, this is so much better than them sitting at home in front of a TV or computer. Not all kids are into the organized sports, and they need a place too. I understand the damage to the steps and noise, but I would love to see a skateboard park. I'm not sure why the small one that we had a few years back was taken down. It seemed we were headed in the right direction then by having one. I feel bad that the kids are constantly asked to move on.

This is anobrainer. Ask the kids? SOme would prefer to hop the railings and shoot off the top of the steps.I hate to say it but I think that is the thrill as a teenager, just my thought. What I think we should do is hire a grant writer, hire a grant writer and once again hire a grant writer. There are many grants that would be useful to this town and funding recreation would be one of them. Perhaps build a great and awesome pool! That would be used far more that the skate park, which I am not oposed to we justneed to plan get public input and move forward with a working document that we can followfor the future of Cornwall.

When Jim Solome was in office, he backed the building of Cornwall's skate park (yes there once was a small one). When Dick Randazzo succeeded him, he made sure it was taken down. Build it and they will come....
