General News: Thai Restaurant Planned in Village

Owners of the new restaurant plan to make over the former Port O Spain restaurant.
Owners of the new restaurant plan to make over the former Port O Spain restaurant.
August 27, 2010

A new restaurant is coming to the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson. Sawatdee Thai Cuisine plans to open a sushi bar and Thai food restaurant on Hudson Street, where its owners hope to recreate the success that Max’s restaurant once had in the same spot.

Co-owner Emanuel Guaranuccio of Beacon says his wife, who is Thai, is currently in Thailand where her family has long been in the restaurant business. When she returns, she will bring tablecloths and paintings to decorate the restaurant, as well as a chef who has most recently been employed as a senior chef at a resort in Thailand.

The couple plans to open the restaurant around October 20th, when they will bring five Buddhist monks to hold a ceremony to bring blessings to the new business. Guaranuccio said that he is optimistic that the Thai restaurant will be a success, despite the failure of four restaurants at the location in the past decade.

“I am very confident that we will succeed,” Guaranuccio said in a phone interview. “The key is the Thai food. When word gets out, people will start coming.”

Guaranuccio said that he will offer people a sample of dishes when they first come in so that they can get used to the various spices used to prepare Thai food. Thai food will be served in the dining area and sushi will be available in the bar.

“I think it will be very cultural for the area,” he said, noting that Thai food is very popular on the east side of the Hudson and he expects it will soon catch on in this area, too.

Comments:

We now have fabulous Mexican food at Avacado, great Indian food at Vales Gate, and now we're getting authentic Thai food. What great news. Good luck to the Guaranuccios!

Okay you have my attention! Looking forward to the opening of the resturant. Hope we can still order sushi at the table though. Good luck to the Guaranuccios Family.

@Gary - you apparently have no taste or have never tasted mexican food as Avocado is pretty bad. Just check out their reviews online if you don't believe one guys opinion.

@ Brad, you apparently don't know who Gary Regan is, to say he "has no taste or [has] never tasted Mexican food."

Regan is a nationally known writer on spirits (liquor, not ghosts) and the author of a number of widely respected books, including "The Bartender's Bible," "The Book of Bourbon" and "The Joy of Mixology."

Okay, this doesn't automatically make him a restaurant reviewer, but I assure you that somebody who is widely considered to be an expert on fine tequila (as well as many other spirits including single-malt scotches and bourbon) has probably eaten more than a little Mexican food. To say nothing of the fact that Gary will be shown to the finest table in the room in many Manhattan restaurants as soon as the maitre d' sees him.

Go to ardentspirits.com--his website, considered to be must reading among fine mixologists all over the country--to learn more.

Stephan is right in saying that just because I happen to know my stuff on spirits and cocktails, that doesn't make me a food expert. I based my comments on Avocado on my visit to Oaxaca, where I ate myself silly for a week,a few visits to Jalisco where I ate in neighborhoods joints as well as fancy restaurants, and frequent meals in well-regarded Mexican places in the city. I'll stand by what I said--Avocado is fabulous. Thank God it's not Tex-Mex! :-)

Good luck to the new restaurant!

Thank you so very much for the kind words Gary Regan, David Rodriguez and Gerry Wagner.
Comments like those make us try harder everyday to better our restaurant, and are great encouragement. Hopefully we'll see soon at Avocado so we can thank you personally, and don't forget to say hi to me (Kriz).

Brad Holiday, I'm so sorry you find our food "bad". What was it about it that you didn't like, or what item? Perhaps the kitchen staff was having an off day, don't know but please consider giving us another try. We value our customers opinions, and more often than not listen to their advice. If we don't know something is broken we can't fix it.

Best of wishes to Mr. Guaranuccio and his wife, it is difficult times but Cornwall is a great place to run a business and the people are the best. Please Mr. Guaranuccio do not hesitate to stop by Avocado and say hello, ask any questions, ask for any help or have a drink. Avocado opened just over a year ago and I know opening a new restaurant is no easy task, but I did gain some experience, so I'll be glad to help.

On their site, they say:

"...where its owners hope to recreate the success that Max?s restaurant once had in the same spot."

I hope not!! Max's was the wrong restaurant at the wrong spot! How long has Max's been out of business? Let's hope they do BETTER than Max's!
