General News: Car Show to Benefit SLCH Cancer Center

August 23, 2010

From St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital

The first “All American Muscle and Classic Car Show to Benefit the Littman Cancer Center” will be held Sunday, August 29, on the grounds of St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital’s Cornwall campus. The show, sponsored by the Mustang Club of Orange County, NY, will feature more than 100 show cars, entertainment and food to raise money in support of SLCH’s Littman Cancer Center.

“We are so proud that this group of hospital friends has brought the community together to raise funds for this important cause,” said Sue Sullivan, Vice President, Advancement and Government Affairs. “We’re excited to be a part of this star-quality show and we expect a great turnout. We’re inviting everyone to come and appreciate these classic automobiles, enjoy a day of fun and help support the critical programs and services provided to our cancer patients and their families.”

The event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., will also feature free blood pressure screenings, health information, tours of the hospital’s Cancer Center, and information on the hospital’s Sleep Therapy and Physical Therapy programs.

Event chairpersons Alan Southwell and Judy Moore, both SLCH employees, expect a large turnout of unique and interesting show cars. Each became involved as a result of a personal connection to cancer. “My mother, June Southwell, passed away in 2003 from Breast Cancer that had metastasized. If we had had the technology then that we have today here in the Littman Cancer Center, perhaps she would still be with us,” said Southwell, who’s also a member of the Mustang Club of Orange County, NY. Moore, whose mother also died from cancer, agreed. “Our options were limited then. Here at SLCH, patients and families are informed of treatment options and provided support … something we didn’t have.”

The Club will present trophies for first, second and third place in four categories. Car owners wishing to register their automobiles are required to pay a $15 registration fee. Entry to the event, however; is free. Preregistration is not required. For more information, please call Alan Southwell at (914) 443-4253.

SLCH’s Littman Cancer Center offers extensive radiation oncology, infusion therapy, ancillary therapies and support services that includes a Patient Navigation program to ensure medical and emotional continuity for both the patient and their caregiver. For more information on support services and treatment options offered at the Littman Cancer Center call (845) 458-4544 or visit stlukescornwallhospital.org.
