General News: Town Pleased With Progress on Repairs

August 19, 2010

Construction workers are busy replacing a damaged porch on a building on Main Street where a gutter came crashing down last month, spilling debris on the sidewalk and nearly striking a pedestrian.

At a court hearing on Wednesday, Cornwall building inspector Gary Vinson told Judge Frank Navarra that he is “pleased” with the work being done to repair the building and would like to give the owner, Maria Aiossa, until September 8th to finish the work. That’s the date when Aiossa is supposed to go to trial to face charges resulting from failure to repair more than a dozen violations in the building.

Judge Navarra warned Aiossa, who was accompanied in court by two of her grandsons, that she could face a fine of $50 a day for each of the violations, dating back to March and advised her to get an attorney.

Vinson has been trying to force repairs on the building at 276 Main Street for more than 20 years, he said last month, when he noted that until now the building owner had been “less than cooperative.”

Comments:

This building on Main Street is an embarrassment to a struggling Main St. Two days ago the building appearred to be gutted. While I have faith in the building inspector and the town processes I continue to be shocked at the disrepair this building has been allowed to fall into. At this point I would question the overall integrity of the structure. A vacant building with "bandaids" is not what our town needs.
