Pet owners in Cornwall-on-Hudsonwill have to be more careful about controlling their animals following Monday’s passage of a new animal control law by the village board of trustees.

The new law requires animal owners to keep their dog, cat or companion animal on a leash and to keep it from defecating or urinating on private or public property unless it is on a leash and the owner cleans up afterwards.

The law also requires owners of pit bulls and guard dogs to post a warning on their property and calls for owners to be fined if they allow their animals to make excessive noise, bite, chase or jump on a person, chase cars, or injure another animal. Requirements for outdoor animal houses and the transport and maintenance of animals in vehicles are also covered in the new legislation.

Complete copies of the new law are available at village hall.

Comments:

any dog is a "guard" dog; that's what they do when their people are not home. Is a chihuahua a guard dog? You betcha!

So if my dog barks when another dog is being walked in front of my house, I get fined? Interesting.

Two guesses who hates dogs? LOL You can't make this up.

We actually are more in need of a 'people control law' to assure that irresponsible pet owners pick up their puppies' poo and keep their cats from prowling around neighborhoods and eating the songbirds. The rest of this mess can be handled by the nuisance noise law and civil complaint.

Agreed! This seems just a tad vague. But then I've not seen the new law's wording. Which apparently you can only get by going to Village Hall - which is never open when I am home. Why can't these be posted online for perusal?
