Great acting and a rip-roaringly funny script come together on the outdoor stage at Palaia Vineyards for a four-day run of the Neil Simon comedy, Rumors, that is sure to get you laughing on a midsummer’s night.

Fans of the high school drama club won’t want to miss this chance to see director Rich Aufiero on stage in a role that proves his acting skills. Auferio also directed this production by the Vineyard Comedy Players, which features a cast of ten talented actors who possess years of stage experience (Check out the full list of these fantastic local actors below).

Rumors is set at the upscale suburban home of Charlie, the deputy mayor of New York, and his wife, Myra, who planned to celebrate their anniversary with a group of friends. Myra is oddly absent when the guests arrive and Charlie mysteriously gets shot in the earlobe, setting off a chain of efforts to cover-up the incident and prompting the guests to worry about everything from the IRS to their own infidelities.

While the couples grapple with how to handle the crisis, they toss barbs at each other and cynically put down other friends for being mere social climbers. The play becomes a feast for analyzing human motivations and emotions.

The fast-paced dialogue and classically drawn caricatures of the neurotic psychiatrist or the wife who can’t keep her hands off other men provide lots of comedic moments that Auferio and the cast play out to the fullest. As the cover-up of Charlie’s shooting begins to fall apart, the actors become more desperate – and hysterically funny.

Rumors has nothing on its mind but to attack the funny bone, and it is pretty relentless. (The play does contain language not suitable for young children.)

You can catch a performance of Rumors on Thursday, July 8, through Sunday, July 11 at 7pm (rain or shine) at Palaia Vineyards Winery, Sweet Clover Road (just off Rte 32), Highland Mills, NY. All tickets are $10.00
