General News: How to Beat the Heat in Cornwall

July 06, 2010

Update:  COVAC 's cooling station will remain open on Wednesday until 10 pm.

As the temperature heads toward 100 degrees in Cornwall, emergency services are preparing to provide a cooling station at the Cornwall Volunteer Ambulance headquarters at Clinton Street and Hasbroucke Avenue that will become operational if there is a power outage in the area.  COVAC Chief Jack Boyle said that in the event of a brownout or blackout, COVAC will supply a cool place to any local resident.

Kurt Hahn, the head of emergency services in Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson, said that if people are too hot now, they can go to a local business,  the public library, Munger Cottage or public building like the village hall meeting room.  He also suggests taking advantage of the town pool.

In a memo, Hahn has this to say about the current weather pattern:

"According to the National Weather Service (www.noaa.gov) and AccuWeather (www.accuweather.com), a dangerous and record-challenging heat wave will affect much of the East this week. The hottest days are expected Tuesday and Wednesday.

In some locations this heat wave will rival many that have occurred in the past 20 years with the potential for up to a several-day stretch of temperatures in the upper 90s to low 100s from southern New England to the Carolinas. Temperatures over the Independence Day weekend were just a warm up compared to how nasty the weather will get, especially for those who do not have air conditioning or must do manual labor outdoors."
