Sizzling temperatures didn’t stop the participants in the annual Fourth of July parade from making their two-mile march along Hudson and Main Streets from the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson through the town of Cornwall.

Parade Grand Marshall Glen McGinnis

To start the parade, the two local police chiefs came first, then Parade Grand Marshall Glen McGinnis smiled and waved from the back seat of a white Chrysler convertible just behind the American Legion color guard.

U.S. Representative John Hall joined local elected officials, including mayor Joe Gross, who dressed as Henry Hudson, town supervisor Kevin Quigley, town councilmembers Mary Beth Greene-Krafft and Randy Clark, and county legislator Kevin Hines, in the line of march.

New Floats in the Parade this Year

This year some new floats participated in the parade. A replica of the village bandstand was pulled on a flatbed truck and featured a sign marking its 25th anniversary. The Duncan Avenue Block Party made a float that featured some of the homes along the avenue and the Cornwall Central School District’s Board of Education created a float that promoted the benefits of a good education.

Cub Scouts Mark 100the Anniversary

The boy scouts, the cub scouts, the girl scouts and the brownies all had a role in the parade, either marching or waving from the back of a truck. Pack 6 of the cub scouts brought along a special float, a giant cake celebrating 100 years of the scouting organization.

The sports teams – from all-star baseball to soccer – were in the line-up, along with two gymnastic groups. The high school drama club and the members of the graduating class of 2010 squirted water guns and tossed candy along the route.

Eight Bands Keep the Marchers in Step

A parade couldn’t find its beat without music and bands were interspersed throughout. First off was the MacLeods of Cornwall pipes and drums led by former Cornwall police chief Rusty O’Dell. The Saints of Swing band, the Gentlemen of Jazz Dixieland Band, the Middletown City Band, the Civil War troopers Fife & Drum, the Cornwall Middle School band, the Tappan Zee Bridgemen Band and the Summertime Marching Band rounded out the musical side of the march.

With vintage automobiles, fire trucks and ambulances, the Half Moon Ship and Claremont steam ship and the NFA team’s solar racing car all in the line-up, people who came to see the parade had plenty to admire this July 4th.
