General News: State Senate Votes to Re-name Rt. 218

July 01, 2010

The effort to re-name a portion of Route 218 in honor of Cornwall-on-Hudson native General David H. Petraeus was re-invigorated this week when the New York State Senate unanimously approved legislation authorizing the move.

The legislation, which had been introduced by state senator William Larkin, designates Route 218 in the town of Cornwall from Route 9W to the Thayer Gate of the United States Military Academy as the “General David H. Petraeus Highway.”

In a statement, senator Larkin said "It is an honor for me to carry this legislation which reflects the pride and support our community has for General Petraeus," said Senator Larkin. "He is truly a "favorite son" and his commitment and dedication to the men and women of our armed forces is an inspiration to everyone, particularly the West Point community. This is our small way of expressing our deep pride and gratitude for the sacrifices he is making to ensure our country is safe.”

The legislation now moves to the Assembly for action.
