In an exclusive interview with News from Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson, General David Petraeus said he was sad that his friend and colleague, General Stanley McChrystal, was out of his position as commander of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan.

General Petraeus, the head of U.S. Central Command, was picked by President Barack Obama on Wednesday to replace McChrystal, whose resignation was accepted earlier in the day after he and members of his staff made comments critical of the U.S. administration’s handling of the war in Afghanistan.

“I was very sad to see him go,” Petraeus said prior to delivering the keynote speech at the commencement ceremony for graduates of Cornwall Central High School, where he received his own diploma forty years ago. “He is a great friend of mine.”

Petraeus praised McChrystal’s performance in Afghanistan and Iraq, saying “it is sad to see a great soldier lose his job. He built a great foundation in Afghanistan.”

Petraeus, who has been McChrystal’s superior, said he was in Washington on Wednesday for a scheduled national security meeting when he was tapped by the president to replace McChrystal.

“I came in for a monthly meeting,” he said, “and came out nominated for a new job.” Petraeus said he was surprised to be nominated, but notes that his position won’t become official until it is confirmed by the Senate.
