Thirteen proved to be a lucky number for organizers of the 13th annual RiverFest held Saturday in Donahue Memorial Park in Cornwall-on-Hudson.

Predictions of thunderstorms, even the remote threat of a tornado, failed to materialize during the daylong festival. It was hot and humid and that perhaps only attracted more people to enjoy the beauty of the Hudson River, to listen to the bands playing live music under the main tent, or to simply stroll among the vendors and local organizations who set up booths in the park.

In the true spirit of RiverFest, the sloop the Woody Guthrie offered free rides on the red-sailed ship and people paddled out into the Hudson after getting paddling instructions from a guide at Storm King Adventure Tour. Another sleek 12-foot yellow kayak was on view as festival goers arrived, the prize of a raffle that was awarded at the end of the day to winner from the Bronx.

Children enjoyed getting their faces painted, playing with hula hoops or listening to a funny story teller. Wynn Gold, the chair of the festival organizing committee roamed the grounds smiling, talking with friends and noting that he always has fun at RiverFest.

RiverFest 13 was the first time participating for Cornwall Public Library. I was impressed with the organization and staging of the event. We'll be back next year!
