The annual Memorial Day parade took place today under a brilliant blue sky, a fitting tribute to the men and women whose lives were being honored for their service to their country. The first marchers set off promptly at 10 am as residents of the town and village took their places along the route to cheer on the marchers.
As the parade wound its way up Hudson Street in Cornwall-on-Hudson, it stopped briefly near the elementary school while officials lay a wreath at the memorial to servicemen from World War I. Passing under a gigantic American flag flying from the top of the fire company’s ladder truck, first the honorary color guard, then town and county officials and the local police chiefs led the way.
The boy and girl scouts, cubs and brownies, carried their banners and put out a good effort to maintain their orderly lines. This year, the Cornwall high school band brought along its Green Dragon mascot, sweltering no doubt, inside the big green suit.
When the New York Military Academy band, followed by all of the school’s cadets in crisp formation passed, people cheered what may be the last appearance of the academy in the annual parade. The Civil War Troopers, with women and children in period dress, paraded by as they played the tunes of the fife and drum, while the McLeods of Cornwall wailed on pipes and drums.
The Highland Engine Company and the Mountainville Fire Company led the group of first responders marching with their gazes fixed on the fellow marching just ahead. The Storm King Engine Company members, in their red shirts, came next.
The Cornwall Volunteer Ambulance Corp brought up the rear of this symbolic parade that honors veterans and those who died in America’s wars.
