General News: Residents Look for Riverfront Docks

May 20, 2010

By David DeRita

Frustration over the absence of the public dock at Cornwall landing was discussed during the village board meeting held on Monday night. In letters sent to Cornwall-on-Hudson mayor Joseph Gross, residents like Patrick Conklin reproached the council for not taking care of what he considered a “valuable asset.”

Ten-year-old Nicholas Anderson said he spoke for many outraged citizens in his letter: “It’s fishing season. What are you guys doing? So many people are mad.”

Mayor Gross explained to the residents present at the meeting that the docks were damaged due to ice in the river during the past winter and that five new pilings, estimated to cost $400 a piece, will need to be installed. Dave Halvorsen, superintendent of the Department of Public Works, said that the Cornwall Yacht Club will assist in installing a pile driver and that the repairs should be made "by Memorial Day."   The mayor also noted that boats can still be launched from the concrete ramp.

Comments:

What happened to all those great(?) docks that the village inherited from Vasser or Marist?

"So many people are mad."

Ain't that the truth.

Karen,
Why do you think the docks are an eye sore?

Ira,
Karen is referring to the broken docks next to the Cornwall Yacht Club's fence that have just been sitting there, rotting, for over a year. They need to removed, but the DPW has so much on their agenda right now! These docks are not only an eyesore, but are a public hazard and liability issue with nails sticking out, etc. She is not referring to the Village docks, which the Yacht Club has, once again, helped us out with by assisting with their pile driver.

So those bargain docks that we (the village) got for free, now could basically end up costing thousands of dollars in manpower and carting fees to get rid of, am I correct?
