The Cornwall high school drama club’s stellar production of Les Miserables won seven awards in the regional competition, the Dutchess Community College Performing Arts Program’s High School Theatre Awards, including the top honor, Best Musical.

The drama club’s fall production of the comedy California Suite also picked up two awards.

The Cornwall production of Les Mis was selected from a group of nine musicals submitted to the awards program; California Suite was one of five plays.

The elaborate staging and talented singing of the actors in Les Mis clearly impressed the judges, who declared Patrick Hoagland (Valjean) and Brien Schweizer (Javert) tied for Best Actor in a Musical. Tomas Kerr was named Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Enjolras. The large ensemble cast won the award for Best Chorus .

Tony Ravinsky’s scenic design of Les Mis garnered the award for Best Scenic Design of a Musical and director Rich Aufiero was tied for Best Director of a Musical Honorable Mention. Pam Huestis also tied for the award Best Costumes for a Musical Honorable Mention.

Ravinsky received Best Scenic Design of a Play Honorable Mention for his set for California Suite. Matt Begby’s portrayal of Stu in that play was honored with Best Featured Actor in a Play Honorable Mention.

“Everyone affiliated with the program should be extremely proud of the recognition they so richly deserve,” director Aufiero said when he announced the awards on Monday. The drama club members will receive their awards at a dinner to be held May 26th at Dutchess Community College.

Comments:

Congratulations to the cast and crew of "Les Miserables"! I saw the play and it truly was a Broadway caliber performance! This is just another reason to vote in favor of the school budget and make sure it passes! So that our wonderful drama programs are not CUT in a contingency budget and our children can continue to have this wonderful experience! Please vote YES on May 18th!
