General News: Summer Teen Drama Camp Offered

Are you planning what to do with your teens who are too old for summer playground and too young to get a job? Well, local theatre director Karen Eremin is offering a new opportunity for youth age 12 to 16 to perform this summer in the Hudson Valley Summer Stage production of the Broadway musical 13.
Summer Stage is a new program that Eremin is modeling on the Helen Hayes Youth Theatre program in Nyack, which produces full-length shows in two weeks of intensive day camp. Rehearsals begin Monday, June 28th at Step by Step Dance Studio in Cornwall-on-Hudson. Performances will be Friday, July 9th and Saturday, July 10th at the Walter Reade, Jr Theatre at Storm King School.
The Show is About Friendships and Acceptance Among Teens
13 is a high-spirited musical comedy written for teenagers, which ran for three months on Broadway in the Fall of 2008. Just before his 13th birthday, Evan Goldman, a native New Yorker, is forced to move to Indiana when his parents split up. Evan makes a great friend almost immediately, then finds out when school starts that if he has any hope of fitting in with the popular kids, the friend has got to go. The show presents a hip, humorous look at the confusion, aspirations and horrors of early teendom, and features an unforgettable rock score from Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown.
Director and Choreographer Bring Years of Experience
The director, Karen Eremin, has been involved in school district theatre for the past thirteen years in both costume design and directing and she is founding director of the Little Theatre Group at Cornwall Central Middle School. She will be working with Ronda Barber, owner of the Step by Step Dance Studio, who will provide choreography direction for 13.
“The years I spent directing at Cornwall-on-Hudson elementary school and the middle school showed me that this is what I want to be when I grow up,” Eremin said, “so I'm starting a children's summer theatre day camp.”
