General News: This Week in Lacrosse

April 29, 2010

From Dina Clohessy

The 7th & 8th Grade Green Squad Wins

The Cornwall 7th and 8th grade Green Squad (the Team is split into two squads, Green and White) opened its season with a win over Warwick at Warwick on Saturday April 24th. This was the first game the boys have ever played, and they played well.

Kevin Abbott tied the game at 1-1 after hassling the Warwick goalkeeper and causing him to drop the ball in his own net. Warwick pulled ahead again 2-1 after which Cornwall's PJ Ryan tied it at 2-2 with an unassisted goal after winning the face-off.

With 1.5 minutes left in the game, Eric Growney was fed on the crease by Matt Wheeler and scored to pull ahead 3-2. After a rough face off, won by PJ Ryan, he fed the ball again to Eric Growney who was again open on the crease and scored the final goal to end the game 4-2 in Cornwall's favor.

Victor Ramos was awesome in Cornwall's goal, stopping most of the shots that were taken on him, and Ben Friedlander was a tough defender, not allowing the Warwick attack to get by him.

Division 2 Boys Take a Loss

Cornwall Division 2 boys lacrosse lost their first game to the seasoned Warwick by a score of 8-5. All the boys played very hard and kept the game close scoring four unanswered goals in the second half. Mid-fielder Ryan Viezthann had four goals and attack Richard Thorpe had one goal. Goalies Alexander Velez and Tristen Norton kept Cornwall in the game with 12 saves each. Their next game is Sunday May 2 at Washingtonville.
