Fifteen boy scouts from Troops 28, 118 and 148, as well as Venture Crew 353, were honored on Sunday at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City where they received various Emblems of Faith. Each scout participated in a preparation program for several months, led by dedicated volunteers who coach the boys through the programs that are designed to help Catholic scouts develop a fully Christian way of life in the faith community, deal with different life choices, and understand ministries and issues in today’s church.

Earning the Ad Altare Dei Emblem were Stephen Allen, Thomas Boucher and Andrew Stein from St. Thomas of Canterbury of Cornwall, Andrew and Matthew Fabbro from St. Patrick’s of Highland Mills, Evan Gagnon from Most Holy Trinity of West Point, Patrick Riley from Sacred Heart of Newburgh, and Matthew Terwilliger from St. Mary’s of Newburgh. Earning the Pope Pius XII Emblem were Charlie Boucher, Ian MacDonald, Isabelle MacDonald, Jackie Matza, Molly Niblo and Kyle Schroeder from St. Thomas of Canterbury and Eric Reimer from St. Mary’s of Washingtonville. Troop 118 Committee Member, Frances Wirth, was honored with the Bronze Pelican Award for outstanding contribution to the spiritual development of Catholic Youth in scouting. James Niblo, an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 118, Venture Scout Advisor for Crew 353 and St. Thomas Youth Group leader, was honored with the Saint George Award, for significant and outstanding contributions to the spiritual development of Catholic youths through the Boy Scouting program.

The scouts and adults received their emblems at the end of a special mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Following the mass, several of the scouts gathered at a local restaurant to celebrate with their families and fellow scouts. While waiting to be seated, NFL Hall of Famer and former NY Giant linebacker, Harry Carson, came up to Andrew Stein and shook his hand. He introduced himself as a former scout and congratulated Andrew and his friends on their medals. His advice to Andrew was to stick with scouting and work toward his Eagle rank
