April 18, 2010

It was drizzling rain under cold grey skies early Saturday morning when a group of dedicated volunteers donned ponchos and began to clean up trash along Route 218 in Cornwall-on-Hudson.

Starting at 7 am, members of the Cornwall Conservation Advisory Committee and Boy Scout Troop 206 dragged out tires, beer bottles, computers and even a large propane tank and electric heater that someone had tossed into the bushes off the road.

Organizers report that they also came across decomposed coyote and deer bones, furniture, water bottles and general trash that they placed in plastic bags along the roadside from the village gate on Route 218 to the second parking lot, which is the town/village line.

Kate Goodspeed, who is the chair of the CCAC reports that the group has now adopted that stretch of the highway and is approved to clean it up four times a year. Goodspeed says the members are undertaking the project because “it feels good” – even in the rain.

Comments:

The campaign to stamp out roadside litter began with an Indian's tear nearly half a century ago. Sadly, as so many of us with roadside property know, there remains some distance to go.

So bravo to all the community-spirited folks who organized and carried out the work.

Great job.
