Lacrosse officially came to Cornwall last Saturday when seventh- and eigth-grade girls played the first game of the new Cornwall Youth Lacrosse league.

League co-founder Tom Lilly said that it was exciting to see the kids take the field after months of planning, organizing and problem solving to create the league.

Lilly, who is the coach of Cornwall’s junior varsity football team, introduced lacrosse last summer when he and a colleague, Mark Penaluna, held a four-day clinic at the middle school. When 400 children showed up to learn the game, they decided to form a league, thinking they would field two teams of 18 kids.

Nine months later, Lilly and Penaluna are overseeing a league with eight teams and 201 players who signed up for a chance to play lacrosse. There are six youth teams, both boys and girls, and two high school teams, girls and boys.

Lilly says that the league has gotten going on a very tight budget, using registration fees and donations from several local businesses to buy uniforms and equipment.

Lacrosse is a fast-moving game, Lilly says, and a lot of fun to watch. When the seventh- and eighth-grade girls played last Saturday against West Point, Lilly said they had so much fun on the field that he didn’t think they even noticed if they had won or lost (they lost, 11-2). In the game, Fiona Durking scored the first goal of the season and strong defense was played by Erin Geraghty, who scored an unassisted goal. Goalkeeper Mary Gallo had five saves.

All home games will be played at the Cornwall middle school. The public is welcomed to observe a game. To check the lacrosse schedule, click here for the mid-hudson lacrosse league. For more information about the Cornwall lacrosse teams, visit www.cornwallyouthlacrosse.com
