General News: Additional Resources Added to School Budget

April 14, 2010

With no final word from Albany on the amount of state aid that the Cornwall Central School District will receive next year, the board of education did get some good news on Monday from assistant superintendent for business Harvey Sotland who told the board that an additional $500,000 was found for the upcoming budget.

School board president Larry Berger says that the board members are now trying to decide whether that money should be used to reduce the tax levy or to restore some of the cuts that were proposed in the 2010-11 budget. Berger said that board members could decide to do a combination of both alternatives but they won’t make a final decision until next week.

The current $57.3 million budget proposal calls for the elimination of a music teacher to run the 4th grade band and orchestra program, a physical education teacher, a business teacher at the high school, a computer teacher at the middle school and a special education teacher in the district. In addition, all ten of the district’s kindergarten teaching assistants, along with three other teaching assistant positions, would be cut.

Harvey Sotland said that the additional funds resulted from several drops in expenditures along with increases in revenues. He said that savings on utilities, transportation and BOCES tuition amounted to a projected $332,000 additional funds. At the same time, the district is forecasting a refund of the MTA tax and a refund of student fees for foster care students. Together with excess funds from projects that came in under budget, the increased revenue amounts to nearly $182,000.

BOE president Berger says that the board will come up with a budget proposal and a contingency budget on Monday, then will adopt a final proposal on Thursday, April 22. The budget must be submitted to the state on the 23rd.

Get our kids started right and save the Kindergarten TA?s. Without TA?s, even the best kindergarten teacher cannot get 5 year olds as far as they do now. Compromised learning in kindergarten doesn?t end there?it just ripples upward through succeeding grades with obvious potential impacts in grades 1-12 and test scores but most importantly to the kids. What is at stake here is more than 10 TA jobs?it?s the foundation of our children?s education for years to come. So let?s get the kids started right: save the TA?s. I also support retention of the music teacher position.

There was no mention of all the cuts to the clubs at the middle school and high school they are proposing to eliminate at the high school, NYMSA ,all county, Jazz band chess club, Quiz club, tech club, environmental club and many other clubs that I was trying to wriye them all downat the board meeting the other night also $50.000 of modified sports which means some sports are being cut. There is only one board meeting left for people to come out and and let the board know how you feel. .While I feel there should be kindergarten Ta's I didn't see one kindergarted teacher speak up and say they needed ther TA's I went to every board meeting.

It would be great to analyze the sports budgets. They should receive base funding and then pay to play. I cannot believe that it would cost a lot of money to send the chess club to a meet. But Iam sure that sending the Football Team is very costly. I am not in anyway suggesting cuts to anything just perhaps funding should be leveraged at a base level and on top of that players should contribute.

I cannot believe that you are considering not returning we the taxpayers money back too us by lowering the projected tax levy. I as a retired senior citizen and many others like me on fixed incomes are being taxed out of this town. With the outrage that is going on in Washington with our representatives spending this country into the ground and the same thing happening in Albany the buck has to stop somewhere. Everyone knows if we don't stop the uncontrolled spending, America as we know it is doomed. We the taxpayer can't take much more. Stop spending this "new found money" and return it to the taxpayer and lower our taxes. I received a fine education when I was growing up without all the frills this school system has ie; TA's for instance, and my parents had to pay for many many club activities and trips that I took. Why can't that be done now? If you want all these extra frills then the individuals who want to enjoy them should pay for them. Not us taxpayers!!

Most of the school board does want to lower the tax levy. i don't like paying these high taxes either. Come to the meeting Mon @ 7pm at the high school and voice your concern.
