General News: Library Candidates Profiles

April 12, 2010

On Tuesday, April 13, eligible voters in the Cornwall Central School District will be deciding whether to accept a proposed 981,300 operating budget for the Cornwall Public Library.

Voters will also be able to choose a new member of the library's board of trustees.  The candidates -- Cheryl Buescher, Gail Gold-Berger and Susanne Vondrak -- are running to fill one seat.

Below is a brief description of each candidate's interest in the position.

Cheryl Buescher

Cheryl Buescher is a mother of two young children and she says that her experience in public relations makes her a good match for the position where she could act as a liaison between the board and the public. Her experience has given her the communication skills to listen to people and take their ideas back to the library board for implementation, she said.

Cheryl has spent a lot of time in the education field. in addition to a bachelor’s degree in public relations, she is a registered nurse with an associate’s degree in applied science.

Cheryl says that she spends a lot of time at the library with her two-year-old and five-year-old children and, while she thinks the library does a really good job with programs for young readers and seniors, it can do more to reach out to the teens and ‘tweens’ in the Cornwall community.

“I want to become more involved” Cheryl said in an interview, “My heart is in it and I want to make a difference for the library and help it.”

Gail Gold-Berger

Gail Gold-Berger is a school teacher and a person who has been devoted to the library for more than three decades as her own children and then grandchildren attended programs and took out books regularly throughout their childhood.

Gail remembers when the Cornwall library was located in town hall, in two small areas that had no place to sit, a ‘gloomy” place she recalled in a recent interview as she described how the public library has blossomed in its new home to become a gathering place for people young and old.

Gail currently volunteers at the library and she speaks highly of its staff. She says if she is elected, she will try to think outside the box to continue to grow and expand the creative programs the library offers. Gail has been an active member of the community for 35 years.  She served as the secretary of the Little League program and she and her husband started the first all night graduation party at the high school.

Susanne Vondrak

Susanne Vondrak says that if she is elected as a trustee of the library she will work to expand the role of the library in the community and to draw on the talents of people in the area to offer creative, low-cost programs that highlight the arts and cultural diversity.

Susanne says she gained a lot of experience when she created the Festival of the Arts program in the middle school and saw the wide range of talent available locally. She also learned by working with non-profit groups, like the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum, that it is important to be fiscally responsible and she’d like see the public library create an endowment to take some of the burden off the taxpayer.

The library is going through a major growth phase, Susanne said, usage is way up and the community is looking for more enrichment programs. With some creative thinking, Susanne believes the public library can meet that demand.
