When given the opportunity to create art, students rarely say no. In this Student Highlight, three seventh-grade students have something to be proud of. Jensine Orcullo and Sarah Curtin, of the Cornwall Middle School, worked together during the after school Art Club and painted a scene on an old, gray cabinet in the art studio. Also a member the Art Club, seventh-grader Tasha Steinhauser went solo on her large painting of a girl in a classroom at school.

Jensine Orcullo’s pencil drawing of a dragon riding a unicycle was the first inspiration to starting the painting with Sarah. Jensine loves to draw a variety of different characters and to write stories about their “strange lives”. Jensine says that pencil is her favorite art material.

Sarah Curtin has always demonstrated effort in Studio Art classes. She is willing to try new things and works well with others. Her unique imagination and painting skill contributed to the overall creativity of the large painting she created with Jensine.

Sarah says her favorite art material to work with is paint, “because its fun to use.”

When asked to name their favorite colors, Sarah chose royal blue while Jensine preferred black, red, purple and white.

Jensine talked about the process of working with Sarah to create their painting. “I enjoyed how we worked together,” she said. “We were able to incorporate both of our ideas and it came out very differently and much better than I first thought.”

Tasha Steinhauer submitted a sketch of a schoolgirl in a classroom setting. It showed individual creativity, as well as a school based theme. During class each week, she was dedicated to finishing the painting. Tasha explains, “The painting was based on a girl in school, learning and remembering important facts.”

Tasha shares one of her earliest memories creating art. “I remember, when I was little, that I drew my whole family. Of course, they were only stick figures, but I liked them a lot. I drew me, my mom, my sis and my dad. I felt proud when it was hung on the fridge. I especially liked the wacky faces I drew.”

Other activities Tasha enjoys are reading, writing and knitting. She also plays sports and loves to cook. Tasha is a member of the Cornwall Middle School Chorus Program. She thinks art is important because, “It is a great way for people to express themselves.”

Jensine and Sarah’s Dragon Painting is on display in the CCMS Studio Art 5/6 classroom. Tasha’s School Girl painting is on display in the New Cafeteria
