General News: Village Tightens Rules for Paying Water Bills

February 25, 2010

The DPW garage was not the only item on the agenda at Monday’s meeting of the Cornwall-on-Hudson board of trustees.

Early in the meeting, trustees approved a motion to make it more difficult for those who fall behind on their water bills to make a payment plan with the village.

Trustee Barbara Gosda explained that the water department has allowed $150,000 in delinquent bills to be paid back under a payment plan – a situation that hurts the cash flow for the department. “We currently have ten of these contracts, some extend two years, “ Gosda told her fellow trustees, “and that means we are waiting quite a long time for our revenue to come.”

The new resolution allows payment plans for no longer than a year and requests must be presented in writing to the board for its approval.

At the meeting, trustee Rick Gioia also pushed his proposal to allow residents to pay their village tax in two installments. After a discussion, it was decided that more time is needed to fine-tune a payment plan.
