General News: Village Board to Address Kayak Permit

February 25, 2010

The future of a permit for a new kayak shop in the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson will be the subject of a special board meeting on Monday, March 8.

Bill Garrison, of Mountain Valley Guides, told the board that a delay in a permit could jeopardize the opening of his proposed kayak store at the site of an ice cream stand in a building owned by Ray Yannone at Idlewild and River Avenues.

Earlier this month, a member of the planning board, Lee Murphy, questioned why a permit was issued by the building inspector, by-passing the planning board, when in his opinion, the kayak business clearly constituted a change of use.

Former village attorney Howard Protter sent a letter to Mayor Gross and the trustees charging that the building inspector showed favoritism toward Yannone. Protter also included copies of the application for a permit, pointing out that the documents were incomplete and riddled with errors, calling the situation a travesty.

At Monday’s board meeting village trustee Mark Edsall agreed that these issues need to be reviewed. “We are walking in a bees nest that has already been shook and seems like we are shaking it again. I think we need to take this seriously,” Edsall told his fellow board members.

Yannone, who is also challenging some of the conditions of his neighbor’s restaurant (see related story) says that he believes he is the target of a systematic attack. “We are making applications the way we are supposed to and every time a decision goes in my favor, it is favoritism,” he commented to the board.

Comments:

Kudos to the Board for addressing the inconsistent business practices of the Building Inspector. Relaxed on the change of use for the occupancy of an ice cream stand, but Rules with an iron fist on the matter of the DPW building. Does anyone else see an inconsistency here?

This feud between these two businessmen has been going on long enough. They both have beautiful buildings and nice restaurants. I don't see why it can't be so hard that they get together and bury the hatchet(preferably not in ones head.) Their buildings and restaurants compliment each other nicely. I know it must be a long story between them and it's hard to let go of grudges but for the sake of the village I'd like to ask them to act like men and have a sit down. Start over and try to compromise as it's in no ones favour that it continue.

Mr Yannone puts on a Great Show every New Years Eve. The stone wall on the Riverbank is beautiful. This feud reminds my of being a young teenager in the Bronx. You would get made at a friend have a little fist to cuffs and then end up being best friends again. Guys go have a few glasses of wine and talk all this over. I'm sure you can come to some sort of compromise.
