General News: Power Outages in Cornwall

February 25, 2010

More than 100 Central Hudson customers in greater Cornwall are without power on Thursday, following the snowstorm early Wednesday that dropped half-a-foot of snow on the area. Central Hudson crews are restoring power to some customers as a new storm is bringing even more snow.

The largest pocket without power is in the area of Orrs Mills and Pleasant Hill Road, where Central Hudson reports 70 customers may have their power restored by mid-day on Thursday. Another 33 customers are reported without power on Angola Road near Route 9W. Scattered outages are also found along Route 32 and in the Firthcliffe area of Cornwall.  (For an up-to-the-minute map of outages, visit stormcentral.cenhud.com/

Central Hudson reports that as of Thursday morning, approximately 50,000 customers were without electric service throughout the eight counties it serves, including 2,000 in Orange County.

The power company also issued these safety tips:

Check on frail or elderly neighbors, relatives or friends – including any who may rely on electrically operated life-sustaining equipment – and encourage them to seek alternate shelter, as it may take several days before their power is restored.

All local residents are reminded to stay clear of downed or sagging wires – they could be lethal. As fallen wires may be hidden by trees or debris, extreme caution should be used when moving through an outage zone. If a power line falls on a vehicle, occupants should stay inside and wait for rescue crews. Customers should not heat their homes with an unvented heater, gas range or any similar appliance, as they can produce deadly carbon monoxide. Generators should be operated only in a vented, dry location; outdoor gas grills should never be used to heat indoors because they pose a fire hazard and can give off deadly carbon monoxide gas.
