A tip of the hat to an American master painter will soon be erected on a tiny bit of road that runs from Route 32 to old Route 32 in Mountainville.

The town of Cornwall board approved a request by the town highway department on Monday to name the small road Winslow Way, in honor of the 19th-century American painter Winslow Homer, who spent two summers on a farm nearby.

Homer spent the summers of 1878 and 1879 as a guest of his patron Lawson Valentine who owned 1,000 acres stretching from Black Rock Forest to Schunnemunk Mountain. Art historians describe how the great realistic painter explored scenes of rural life amid the pastures and hills of the area.

Today, only one house remains on the site of the farm and the newly-named Winslow Way will serve to mark the path where the great painter once roamed.

Comments:

BIG MISTAKE! Not only would it be more respectful and appropriate to use the artist's full name,
but our community might benefit from internet searches for Winslow Homer.
