By Gina Dianis, Middle School Art Teacher

The Cornwall Middle School is filled with many talented students who excel in extracurricular activities, including the pursuit of visual arts. Two students at the middle school in particular have shown great interest and dedication to their art work.

Jessica Stingle

Jessica Stingle is a sixth-grader who is a member of the after school 5/6 Art Club and she recently had one of her drawings selected as the cover of the CCMS Winter Art and Music Concert Program. Her visual images are well thought out and feature creative art work. She always has a positive attitude and strives for her best in art class.

One of Jessica’s earliest memories creating art is when she made a book with her father about many different things. After drawing the illustrations, she told her father what the story was about and he wrote down her words. This experience seems to have stayed with her because today she believes that art allows you to be creative not only in art class, but in English as well. “You can draw a picture and create a story about it,” Jessica said.

Jessica’s favorite artist is Salvador Dali. She enjoys his images because he “thinks outside the box” and has many strange and creative drawings.
As an artist, Jessica would simply be happy working with a pencil and paper. The art work that she is most proud of is a drawing of her cat that she created from a photo, noting that the two “look almost exactly alike.”

Besides enjoying art, Jessica is involved in softball, basketball, soccer, horseback riding and plays the flute. Her favorite color is turquoise. When asked where she sees herself in 20 years, Jessica replied, “Helping out at my Mom and Dad’s jewelry store.”

Lyla Denning

Lyla Denning is a fifth-grader at Cornwall Middle School. She is another artist whose interest, artistic skill and consistent enthusiasm about creating art have been exhibited in the Art Studio. Also a member of the 5/6 Art Club, Lyla has been creating art since she was very young. She remembers “doing art when she was in preschool. I drew a flower.”

Although Lyla shows promise in her drawing skills, her favorite material to work in is clay. Fortunately, clay is a part of the fifth-grade art curriculum and currently she is working on a clay figurine.

Lyla says she most proud of the playing cars she drew, part of an assignment in which students were asked to draw the face cards as people that they knew.

Her favorite artist is Vassily Kandinsky. “I love the way he uses different lines, shapes and colors,” Lyla explains She was very excited to share her recent experience of viewing the Kandinsky exhibit on display at the Guggenheim Museum of Art in New York City last November.

Along with creating art, Lyla enjoys playing sports and being with friends. Her favorite color is light blue. Lyla sees herself working in education when she is older and would like to become either a classroom teacher or an art teacher. She believes art is important because, “it helps people express themselves.”

When asked about her thoughts about the impact art has on our community and/or our global world in general, Lyla says, “I think art impacts our community and global world by helping make it a prettier place to live.”
