General News: The Northern Lights Explained

The Aurora Borealis
The Aurora Borealis
January 14, 2010

The Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, is a spectacular light show that captivates anyone lucky enough to see it in night sky. There have been hundreds of stories and theories to explain the lights but until about a century ago, no one suspected a connection with the sun.

On Saturday, people in Cornwall will have a rare opportunity learn about the Aurora Borealis from a world-renowned solar scientist, Pal Bekke, who will be making a multi-media presentation at the Cornwall Public Library.

Bekke, who is visiting the U.S. from his home base in Norway, will explain some of the mystery of the Northern Lights, a phenomenon that is embedded in the mythology of many cultures and has been characterized as everything from dancing spirits to God’s anger. His presentation will explain how solar explosions controls the aurora and how scientists can forecast when it will appear.

Bekke has presented his work at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC and at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. His presentation in Cornwall is free and open to people of all ages. Pre-registration is required by calling the library at 534-8282.
