Voters on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved a measure to spend $735,000 to renovate parts of the Cornwall Central Middle School. The final vote count was 501 in favor of the move and 47 opposed. Five paper ballots remained unopened.

The renovation project will repair seating in the building’s auditorium, upgrade wiring, repair broken lockers and fix walls in the library, along with other minor repairs.

Following the approval of the referendum, assistant school superintendent Harvey Sotland said that the renovation project will begin during the summer after the projects are put out to bid this spring. Sotland, who is in charge of business affairs for the district, explained earlier that the funding for the renovations will come from state Building Aid and EXCEL Aid, without costing Cornwall taxpayers additional money.

Timothy Rehm, the school district superintendent, said that he was not surprised that the referendum was approved, although the margin was bigger than he expected. “I thought it would be 80-20 in favor,” he said immediately after the vote in which 92% voted in favor, “but we saw a lot of college kids, parents and others voting who knew that these projects need to get done.”
