General News: Cuffe Places Fourth in National Race

Cornwall’s Aisling Cuffe won fourth place in the national Footlocker Cross County Championship race held Saturday in San Diego, California. She finished the five kilometer race with a time of 17:22.
Cuffe, a junior at Cornwall Central High School, held back in the beginning of the race, then began challenging the front runner. The lead went back and forth between Cuffe and Megan Goethals, of Rochester, Minnesota, at the mid-point, then Goethals broke free and grabbed the lead.
In the last lap, Chelsey Sveinsson, of Dallas, Texas, came out to challenge Goethals, running past her with 800 meters left. In the closest finish in the history of the Footlocker competition, the two crossed the finish line at 17:07, with Goethals declared the winner.
In 2008, Cuffe, this year’s New York State cross country champion, finished 12th in the Footlocker race. She went on to place second in the Pan American junior games in Trinidad, finishing second in her class.
