The season’s first snowfall arrived just in time to create the perfect setting for the annual Christmas tree lighting in both the town and village of Cornwall on Sunday.
More than 100 people arrived at the village bandstand around 5 pm, many with children in tow, to sing a few carols with the members of the Stormy Weather Players, who had plenty of Christmas spirit after their weekend performance of the holiday classic, Miracle on 34th Street. Village historian Colette Fulton, who also serves as the head of the bandstand committee, welcomed the crowd and signaled the moment to light the tree.
This year, the future of the traditional Christmas tree had been called into question when village board members became concerned about the expense of buying new lights and stringing them on the 60-foot spruce. Several individuals and groups stepped up to donate money for the tree lighting, which cost about $1,000. (See story) No elected village officials attended the ceremony this year.
Members of the Storm King Fire Engine Co. #2, which had pitched in $500 for the lights, were out in full force. When Santa Claus arrived on the back of a fire truck, the young children followed him to the firehouse where they had a chance to tell Santa their wishes for Christmas and taste the hot chocolate and cookies put on by the department’s ladies’ auxiliary.

Just for the record, I (and many others) were there, but missed the actual event due to some confusion over the planned time of the tree lighting. We were across the street at the Hudson Street Cafe for the celebration of the first anniversary of the Cornwall Community Co-op. Their festivities were planned around a 6:15 tree lighting, which would have been the intermission between cocktails and dinner. Even with the communication breakdown, a splendid time was had by all!

we thought the lighting was at 6 and thought we had plenty of time to walk our two sons down to see the lighting and santa coming down hudson.
