From the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum

The Hudson Highlands Nature Museum, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating responsible caretakers of the environment, recognized Vanessa Ale at a reception on November 20th for the Silver Award Project she completed for the museum. Vanessa is a member of Girl Scout Troop 291, Heart of the Hudson Council.

Vanessa’s Silver Award Project was to build a child size sloop boat for the Museum’s new Quadricentennial Exhibit. The sloop, complete with steering wheel and sail is a wonderful interactive element that adds to the fun of the exhibit for children. “The children who have come to the Wildlife Education Center have had a great time pretending to sail along the Hudson River,” said Pam Golben, Director of the Wildlife Education Center. “Vanessa was responsible for helping with the sloop design, acquiring donations for the materials and assisting with each aspect of building the sloop.”

The boat is part of the Museum’s exhibit “The Sturgeon Swims through Time” a view of 400 years of fascinating Hudson River history through the "eyes" of an Atlantic Sturgeon. The exhibit includes interactive elements which will engage all visitors as well as a 77" Sturgeon replica. The Wildlife Education Center is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m.
