General News: Chase Ends in Canterbury Brook

December 04, 2009

A Kingston man ended up in Canterbury Brook on Wednesday evening after leading Cornwall police on a chase around the traffic circle and down Main Street.

Cornwall police sergeant Steven Dixon said that the Cornwall police got a call around 6:40 p.m. that a suspect was headed down Route 9W from the city of Newburgh.

Sergio Campana, 39, faces charges of reckless endangerment, driving while impaired by drugs, and other charges in the town and city of Newburgh, after fleeing a own of Newburgh police officer on Balmville Road. Campana drove down Water Street and out to Route 9W, where New Windsor police joined the pursuit. City of Newburgh police sergeant Paul Weber said that in the city Campana cut off a police car after swerving to avoid another cruiser that had attempted to block his path.

After driving down Main Street in Cornwall, Campana turned left onto North Street, directly across from Town Hall, according to Sgt. Dixon, only stopping after he drove down an embankment on Stony Brook Drive. He was apprehended as he tried to flee on foot through the brook and faces additional charges in the town of Cornwall.
